5 Apple Watch Apps You Can Use to Keep Up With the News

Published

There really aren’t many Apple Watch news apps on the App Store right now. But whatever options available are good enough to keep you up to date on what’s happening around you and in different parts of the world.

Right now, your Apple Watch can send you news alerts from Apple News, AP News, TuneIn Radio, Citizen, and Flipboard.

These apps let you learn more about tending news, latest stories, and top headlines from small and large news outlets and blogs.

1. Apple News

Apple News aggregates news and stories from major media outlets, trustworthy sources, and leading magazines such as The Athletic, People, CBS, Vogue, The New York Times, and The Washington Post.

In addition to accessing content curated by Apple’s editors, the Apple News lets you subscribe to your favorite news outlet within the app and even customizes your feed based on the stories you like to read.

Apple News doesn’t display a whole story on Apple Watch. What you see is the story’s headline, thumbnail, source, and some text summarizing the event. That really isn’t a bad thing because you can save the headline for later and read the full story on your iPhone.

2. Citizen

Citizen brings local news to your wrist as soon as they happen, keeping you up to date on what’s going on in your area and in your neighborhood.

News provided by Citizen comes from monitoring emergency scanners and people near you. And the location-based content that you get include local crimes, real-time incidents, natural disaster and fire alerts, and live incident videos.

Citizen news app allows you to set the locations you would like to monitor, such as your child’s school, your loved one’s home, your workplace, and places you frequent. You get instant push notification on your Apple Watch and iPhone as soon as an event occurs, so you’re fully aware about what’s going on in your local.

Citizen focuses exclusively on safety rather than being all rounded. By letting you in on potentially dangerous or harmful incidences before your local government and the police respond, you can take the necessary steps to keep yourself, your loved ones, and your community safe.

3. AP News

Associated Press has been a source for breaking local and world news for at least 178 years.

The agency’s iOS and watchOS app is one of the most downloaded, used, and rated news apps. And that’s mostly because the outlet has worked so hard to establish itself as an unbiased, accurate, and trusted source of information since inception.

AP gets its local, national, and global news directly from the source. The app presents the top five stories in a carousel style. Each story includes a headline, a thumbnail, and a byline.

You can scroll to each carousel for a quick head up or save the story to read later on your iPhone or iPad. Additionally, Associated Press news app lets you build up a feed based on stories that spark your interest.

4. TuneIn Radio

Get TuneIn Radio if you’re not a fan of reading news but still want to catch up with what’s happening around you and beyond.

TuneIn Radio gives you access to at least 100,000 radio channels, which bring you news from trusted sources like Bloomberg Radio, CNBC, Fox News Radio, and WTOP Washington DC.

With TuneIn Radio, you’ll stay up to date on your favorite sports new and even explore the most popular podcasts in the world from anywhere and at any time.

The app’s playback controls on Apple Watch lets you play and pause a radio channels, control volume, and listen in anywhere. You’ll have access to a playlist of your moist recent channels and switch back and forth easily.

One feature that’s missing in TuneIn Radio is channel customization. You won’t decide which stories to listen to, as the radio station to tune in to does the choosing.

5. Flipboard

I’ve been using Flipboard for as long as I’ve known it. And while it’s not as massive as Apple News and Associated Press, Flipboard stands out for its simple, user-focused interface and ease of use.

As one of the popular news aggregators, Flipboard gives you access to articles from thousands of articles from local and national sources.

This news app present stories in different categories, such as health, business, travel, technology, and sports. The watchOS version even lets you scroll through the top 10 stories on your Apple Watch. Each story features a headline, thumbnail, and the category to which it belongs.
