How to Turn Off Fitbit: A Step-by-Step Guide for All Models

Updated:

In this guide, I show you exactly how to turn off Fitbit to extend its battery life and use it for longer than the standard time.

But I should warn you.

Not all Fitbit devices turn off, except in the case where they’ve completely run out of charge. That’s not to say that Fitbit models that don’t turn off require frequent charging, as there are ways to keep Fitbit from draining.

If you have Fitbit Blaze, Versa, or Sense, keep reading to learn how you can turn it off.

How to Turn Off Fitbit

The best way to preserve battery on a working Fitbit device is to turn it off when it’s not in use. But that’s not possible for every fitness tracker and smartwatch in Fitbit’s lineup.

Can I Turn Fitbit Sense and Versa Series Off?

Sense and Versa series are the current smartwatches in the Fitbit line up. To shut down any of these smartwatches:

  • Press the side button to wake up the screen.
  • Swipe the screen to the left to open the apps menu.
  • Find and tap Settings.
  • Scroll to the very bottom and tap Shutdown.
  • Tap the “Yes” option to shut down.
  • Scroll down and tap Shutdown.
  • Tap the “Yes” option to turn off the device.

Note that these steps apply to Fitbit Sense, Sense 2, Versa, Versa Lite, Versa 3, and Versa 4.

And the next time you want to use any Fitbit Sense or Versa, simply press and hold the side button to turn the device back on.

Can I Turn Off Charge Series?

You cannot turn off any Fitbit Charge fitness tracker. The five trackers in the Charge series will just turn off and then automatically restart.

I have a guide on how to restart a Fitbit device. So you should check that out if you would like to learn more.

For the Charge series, the steps are often so simple to follow that it only takes you a minute max to turn off the device and power it up again.

Let’s take Fitbit Charge 5, for example. To turn this off and have it turn back on automatically:

  • Tap the screen to wake up the display.
  • Swipe down multiple times until you see Settings.
  • Tap Settings and scroll all the way down.
  • Tap Restart Device.
  • Confirm that you want to restart the device by tapping Restart.

For a Fitbit Charge, Charge 2, Charge 3, Charge 4, and Charge 5 to turn off completely, it would need to drain its battery to zero percent.

To the best of my knowledge, the only time you would want to let the fitness tracker’s battery to drain completely is if you don’t intend to use it only for a couple of weeks.

Can You Turn Off Fitbit Inspire?

You can’t turn off Fitbit Inspire, Inspire 2, or Inspire 3 completely. These fitness trackers only turn off if their batteries run out of charge.

There isn’t even an option in the Settings section to turn off these devices. What you can do is a restart, especially if you want to fix an operational issue.

Here’s an example:

Let’s say your Fitbit Inspire 3 won’t sync, and you’re feeling frustrated that you can’t get your stats in the companion app. Here’s where you restart the device, and then give it a few seconds to turn on.

To do this:

  • Double tap the Fitbit Inspire 3 screen to wake up the display.
  • Swipe down from the top of the screen until you see the Settings screen.
  • Tap Settings and then swipe up until you see Device Info.
  • Select Device Info.
  • Tap Restart Device and then tap the Restart button.

And that’s all there is to it.

Can You Turn Off Blaze?

In theory, the company wanted the Blaze to be a smartwatch. When it came out, though, it debut more like a smart fitness tracker than a smartwatch. And it has been that way since.

While it’s no longer in active production, Blaze stands out because of many reasons, including a touch responsive screen and a decent battery life.

And if you want to turn it off to preserve battery life, especially if you don’t intend to use it for a few days or weeks:

  • Tap the screen to wake up the display.
  • Swipe left to access the Settings screen.
  • Scroll down until you see the Shutdown option.
  • Tap Shutdown.
  • Confirm that you want to shutdown the device.

The next time you want to use Blaze, press and hold the home button for a few seconds or until the logo appears on the screen.

Can I Turn Off Fitbit Luxe?

Fitbit doesn’t give you an option to turn off Luxe. So unless you want to troubleshoot Fitbit by restarting or you drain Luxe battery completely, the device won’t turn off.

To restart the Luxe because you want to fix a system glitch:

  • Double tap the screen to wake up the display.
  • Swipe down from the top of the screen until you see the settings option.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Scroll down until you see Restart Device.
  • Tap Restart.

If you wish to stop using the Fitbit Luxe for a while, ensure you drain the battery to 0%. This will force the fitness tracker to turn off automatically.

And as I’ve already mentioned, the next time you need to use the device, simply connect the Fitbit to a charge and it will come on automatically.

Can I Turn Off Ace, Ace 2 and Ace 3?

Again, you cannot turn off Fitbit Ace, Ace 2, or Ace 3.

The only way to turn off any of the trackers in the Ace series is to have your kids use the device until the battery drains completely.

You mostly let the battery drain if you want your young one to stop using the device for some time.

And by the way, Ace 3 is currently the best Fitbit for kids because it’s an improved model of the first and second version.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Should I Turn Off My Fitbit?

It’s up to you to decide if you should turn off your Fitbit device or not. It makes sense to turn it off if you want to save battery, especially if you unintentionally forgot to bring your charger with you to a destination farther from home.

2. Why is My Fitbit Not Turning Off?

Your Fitbit is not turning off because its hardware and firmware configuration does not include a turn-off function. If you have such a model, you can turn it off forcefully by waiting for the battery to drain.

Final Thoughts

As you’ve seen, how you turn off a Fitbit depends on the model that you have, as well as on whether it’s a fitness tracker or smartwatch.

To be clear:

Being able to turn the device off is not what to look for in a fitness tracker or smartwatch. That’s mostly because you’ll hardly even think about using this feature in the first place.

Style, customization, overall appearance, smart features, battery life, and performance optimization are the most important deciding factors when it comes to wearable.

I hope you found this guide helpful.
